Above Normal Hurricane Season

The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane season is predicted to be above normal.

The weather guys at the Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service predict a 60% chance of an above-normal hurricane season.

A 30% chance of a near-normal season.

And a 10% chance of the below-normal season.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.

NOAA is forecasting a range of 13 to 19 named storms with winds of 39 mph or higher.

6 to 10 of these could become hurricanes that have winds of 74 mph or higher which will include three to six major hurricanes and categories three, four, or five.

They are stating they have a 70% confidence factor and you can take this to the bank.

In Florida, it is important that we check our hurricane preparedness plans.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, any form of evacuation or sheltering outside of your home will become a problem.

Social distancing and other CDC guidance are intended to keep you safe from COVID-19.

COVID-19 will impact the disaster preparedness plans that you have created, including what is in your go kit, your evacuation routes, and shelters.

The NOAA projection is for overall seasonal activity and is not a forecast of a hurricane making landfall.

The climate prediction center will update the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season projection in August, prior to the historical peak of hurricane season.

Hurricane preparedness is important for the 2020 hurricane season just as it is for every year.

Keep in mind you may need to adjust any plans you had last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now is a good time for most reasonable people to contact your local County Office of Emergency management.

Ask them what their plan of action is based on COVID-19.
