HURRICANE MICHAEL

Hurricane Michael projected to cause $30B in damage

Hurricane Michael, the powerful Category 4 hurricane bearing down on Florida’s Gulf Coast this week, could cause tens of billions of dollars of damage to the region, according to AccuWeather estimates released Wednesday.

The storm is projected to cause roughly $30 billion in damage and lost economic productivity, the service said in a news release. Mobile homes and small houses could suffer “catastrophic damage” from sustained winds in excess of 130 miles per hour, while stronger homes may receive roof damage or other superficial, but costly destruction.

This is the current view from my trusty weather app on my phone.

As you can see from the AcuWeather graphic, the storm will impact Northern Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas with a combined population of 29.47 million people.

Twenty-Nine million people are a statistic, for those of us not directly affected.

Looking back at 2017

Irma: Hurricane Irma may have caused between $42.5 billion and $65 billion in wind and flood damage to residential and commercial property, according to a preliminary estimate.

Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria combined with devastating Western wildfires and other natural catastrophes to make 2017 the most expensive year on record for disasters, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported Monday.

The disasters caused $306 billion in total damage in 2017, with 16 separate events that caused more than $1 billion in damage each.

“2017 was a historic year for billion-dollar weather and climate disasters,” said Adam Smith, an economist for NOAA, on a media call with reporters.

How many millions of people were affected? If it was not you, I am glad. If it was you, what have you done to prepare for the future disasters that are coming.

They are coming. You know that? Right.

Will you be a statistic or a tragedy? The choice is yours.

Till next time
