My Journey with the 101st on National Airborne Day

“From Basic to Airborne: My Journey with the 101st on National Airborne Day.”

Introduction

Hey there, fellow Americans! It’s Daniel Kilburn here, a retired US Army Infantry Senior Drill Sergeant. But before I wore the Brown Round of a Drill Sergeant, I was a young recruit, fresh out of basic, stepping into the world of the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” at Ft. Campbell, KY. And boy, what a journey it’s been! As we approach National Airborne Day on August 16th, 2023, I’m taking a trip down memory lane, and I’d love for you to join me.

The 101st Airborne: More Than Just a Number

The 101st Airborne holds a special place in my heart. But why? Let’s dive into it:

Historical Significance:

The US Military’s Airborne forces have a rich history. From their inception, these airborne warriors have showcased tenacity, playing decisive roles in numerous battles. Their legacy? It’s written in the sands of Normandy, the jungles of Vietnam, and the deserts of the Middle East.

Arrival at Ft. Campbell:

Picture this – the fall of 1972. I’d just wrapped up basic training and was sent directly to the RECON Platoon, F Company 2nd Bn, 327th Infantry. The “No Slack” Battalion, also part of the “Bastogne Bulldogs.”

The 101st had recently returned from Vietnam, and thousands of young men, including yours truly, were filling its ranks. We were the new blood, receiving our Infantry training On the Job by veterans who’d just returned from combat. Talk about getting the real deal!

Historical Note, while in training, the 2nd Bn, 327th Infantry reorganized, and my unit of assignment became SCOUT Platoon, Combat Support Company (CSC) 2nd Bn, 327th Infantry Regiment. The US Army Infantry Battalions were removing its Delta, Echo, and FoxTrot Companies.

A Bullet with My Name:

One memory that’s etched in my mind is when Lieutenant Lubbers, our SCOUT Platoon Leader, handed each of us in the Platoon a .556 round. He told us that each of us had a bullet with our name on it, a little awkward silence, and we were told to write our names on our bullets. After a moment of reflection, we handed them back, and he locked them away, saying, “Now you know where your bullet is.” It was a powerful lesson in fate and destiny.

The Value of Intense Training

The training I received during my time with the 101st was, in a word, invaluable. It wasn’t just about physical fitness or learning to shoot. It was about:

Mental Toughness:

The mind’s a powerful tool; in the 101st, they made sure ours were sharp as tacks.

Teamwork:

We learned the true meaning of the phrase “Leave no man behind.” We had each other’s backs, always.

Respect for the Legacy:

Being part of the 101st meant understanding and respecting the legacy of those who came before us. We were walking in the footsteps of giants.

From Airborne to Drill Sergeant

While my time with the 101st was transformative, becoming a Drill Sergeant was the pinnacle of my military career. But the respect I hold for the Airborne soldiers I worked with? That’s unwavering and deep-rooted. They shaped, molded, and made me the man I am today.
