Stress, Children and Disasters

The last official Year of the Child was 1979.

UNESCO proclaimed 1979 as the International Year of the Child.  The proclamation was signed on January 1, 1979, by United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim.  A follow-up to the 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child, the proclamation was intended to draw attention to problems that affected children throughout the world, including malnutrition and lack of access to education.  Many of these efforts resulted in the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Year_of_the_Child

Here at Emergency Action Planning, we are focusing on 2020 as the year of the child for Disaster Management Planning.

Our starting point is on mental health for children in relation to natural or manmade disasters.  What are the before during and after-effects of stress on a child due to a natural or man-made disaster?

Children are an under-serviced population in disaster management outreach and parental/caregiver training.

I am not a mental health professional, so I am reaching out to you for assistance and information.

My desire is to review and document valid actionable information following the mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery phases of disaster management planning.

What can we do to prepare a child for disasters?  Managing the stress of a child during a disaster?  And how to respond to any lingering effects of stress on a child after the disaster event?

Understanding that children of different ages will react differently, I am seeking child age-related information.

Toddlers

Elementary school-age children

Middle school-age children

High school-aged children.

This stress management information will be presented as a written article and/or audio interview for distribution on this website. https://www.emergencyactionplanning.com
