Today, as we commemorate Veterans Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who have served our nation. It’s a day filled with pride, reflection, and gratitude. But beyond the parades and solemn ceremonies lies a pressing issue that many veterans grapple with—a transition to civilian life, particularly entering the job market.
Personal Reflections as a Vietnam-Era Veteran
As a retired US Army Senior Infantry Drill Sergeant and a Non-Commissioned Officers Academy Instructor, I’ve witnessed firsthand the grit and resilience of our soldiers. There has been a significant change in the dynamics of military service since the Vietnam Era. Service members’ skills have been honed in the most challenging environments and are invaluable, yet often underappreciated in civilian sectors.
The Historical Context of Veterans Day
Veterans Day, originally Armistice Day, was established to mark the end of World War I. On the 11th Hour on the 11th Day of the 11th Month, November 11th, 1918, is recognizes as the end of “the war to end all wars.” Over time, it evolved to honor all veterans, symbolizing our nation’s respect for those who have served.
Vietnam Era: A Crucial Turning Point
The Vietnam Era was a pivotal time in military history, reshaping perceptions and policies around veterans. Post-Vietnam was not known as a time to revere members of the US Military. Instead, military service members were being actively attacked, demeaned, demonized, and defamed by the citizens they swore to protect. Between then and Post 9/11, the attitude has changed. It laid the groundwork for today’s conversations about veteran affairs, including employment challenges.
The Unique Skill Set of Veterans
The military instills unmatched leadership qualities and discipline. These skills are incredibly beneficial in any job setting, though often undervalued in the civilian workforce. Veterans are trained to adapt quickly to changing situations—a skill highly relevant in today’s fast-paced business world. Their experience in teamwork and collaborative problem-solving is also a significant asset.
Roadblocks in Civilian Job Market Entry
One of the veterans’ most significant challenges is translating their military skills to civilian job requirements. The unique military jargon and roles can create barriers to effectively communicating their competencies. The shift from military to civilian life encompasses more than just a job change. It involves adapting to a new culture and social environment, which can be daunting for many veterans.
Bridging the Military-Civilian Divide
There’s a significant gap in understanding between military life and civilian sectors. Employers often struggle to comprehend the full scope of a veteran’s experience and skills. Various programs and initiatives are in place to help bridge this gap. Financial Literacy and Career Planning
Financial literacy and career planning are essential tools for veterans. Understanding the financial aspects of career transition and planning strategically can ease the process significantly. Financial Literacy has only recently (since 2019), become an educational touch point for all service branches. Since financial literacy is not taught in our public school system, this is a step in the right direction for the military community. But there are still millions of veterans lacking in this much-needed tool. The Power of Networking and Mentorship
Networking is key in any career transition. Veterans can benefit greatly from building a professional network that can guide and support them in their job search.
Mentorship, especially from fellow veterans who have successfully transitioned, can provide invaluable insights and guidance. Organizations such as AMVETS, The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans are valuable resources for networking with people who speak the same language and finding mentors who want to see our veterans succeed.
Overcoming Mental Health Stigma
Mental health is a critical issue for many veterans. The nature of the job rarely becomes warm and fuzzy, the sights, sounds, actions, and outcomes can leave even the toughest in a corner crying, but we cannot let anyone know that, we are human and are hurting. The stigma around mental health can hinder their job search and overall transition to civilian life. If you are a veteran or know of a veteran having complications, there are resources that can be of service. Addressing mental health openly and providing appropriate support systems is vital for the well-being of veterans entering the job market
