Prep# 8: Real-World Evacuations

“The vast majority of people never prepare for even the possibility of an evacuation — when the moment arrives they’re often paralyzed with fear and indecision. In spite of all the dangers, people are usually reluctant to evacuate. Some think it’s better to ride out the crisis; others just grossly underestimate the risks.”

When creating your Emergency Action Plan, one key element to add is evacuating your current location to go someplace else.

I know you’re wondering, why should you evacuate?

Pick a reason;

Earthquake

Hurricane

Wild/Urban Fire

Flooding

Civil Unrest

Chemical Release

Add your reason here_____________

It’s no longer safe where you are.

There are more…

When the need to evacuate is triggered, time is of the essence. Do not dillydally.

People rarely even consider the need to evacuate, and when the time comes they are helpless with despair and doubt.

Depending on the situation, you may have a day or two to prepare your evacuation (Hurricane). Unfortunately many disasters do not have a countdown or time-table and you might be required to evacuate immediately.

A basic primer on Evacuation is found at: https://www.ready.gov/evacuating-yourself-and-your-family

A few things to keep in mind when you plan an evacuation.

Go Bags /Emergency Supplies for all family members.

Full tank of gas.

Leave early to avoid gridlock and getting trapped.

Multiple destinations in multiple directions.

Where are your pets?

Practice your evacuation plan with everyone involved.

Please don’t forget to remember to practice and exercise all aspects of your Emergency Action Plan. It is better to discover what is not working now and make adjustments before you need it to absolutely work.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Till Next Time
